I just got the game and it wont work...
When I run the game the screen goes black and returns to windows...
Tech Support says they have the "same" PC as mine and it works...
The Setup program doesn't seems to work either it never saves the configuration and always has the default one... :shifty:

Have you gotten it to work yet? Or does anyone have any ideas of how to solve this? I am experiencing the same problem. After I've clicked the icon, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then I get returned to Windows. No error messages or anything. I use Windows 2000 and my system should be more than capable of running the game.

Hmm... I downloaded a crack (no-cd fix) for the game, as I've had some similar problems with certain copy-protected games before. Now I can run the game. Seems it was the copy protection that caused problems (but I've seen some posts about people having problems with the cracked version, so maybe I shouldn't celebrate too early). It's probably against the forum rules to give links to no-cd cracks, but I'm sure you can find one if you want to try and see if it works for you too.

Same Starforce deal over again, eh?Apparently. But I haven't had any problems with other StarForce-games that I've played. Still.. I hate the fact that I have to get help from pirates to get my legally purchased game to start.

Highly ironic, isn't it? The people who help you play your legally purchased game are the same reason your game won't start.
Hmm, I feel like getting all existential here.

Is this the same problem as I'm having? I've just started playing Black Mirror a couple of days ago. I've just gotten to chapter 2. But after the whole conversation with Det. Collier, my game crashes, kicking me back to Win XP. I've tried re-installing, but nothing works. Do I have to download a patch for this? If so from where?
I think (but am not sure) that copy protection issues only prevent a game from starting. If you've made it to chapter 2, I'm not sure a no cd crack would help you. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Does it always crash in the same place? Have you checked the TAC website (http://www.adventurecompanygames.com) to see if they have a patch?
-emily
EDIT: I just checked and it appears that TAC does not offer a patch for this game. Sorry. Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion.

I don't own the game, so I'm just stabbing in the dark here, but...
If you can find the .ini file that the configuration utility should be modifying, you should be able to go in and manually override the settings by typing in the values you want and saving the file. That might fix the black screen problem you are having.

Just rename mejerk.chr to majerk.chr (overwriting the old file) in the Black Mirror directory... Enjoy!

:D
I found a no-cd crack in the internet which -apparently- is newer than the one that comes with the 'pirated' version of the game (in \crack). The .nfo in this latter crack explains how the 'cracker' made a mistake and what the proper procedure is. So, officially then, you must:
- copy majerk.chr to another folder (say \temp)
- rename mejerk.chr -> majerk.chr (in game folder)
- rename majerk.chr -> mejerk.chr (in \temp)
- copy the NEW mejerk.chr back to the game folder
I did this and everything was resolved properly.
Enjoy.

P.S. I've seen so many people troubled with this topic that maybe it should become *sticky*. What do you say fov?
Thanks for your help. *D I'd rather not clutter up the top of the forum with too many stickies, but it's good to have this info because when someone does post again with the same problem, we can refer them to this thread. It's strange that this problem is suddenly cropping up for so many people, because the game is several years old.
Of course, I'm taking it on faith that everyone is using this solution on LEGAL versions of Black Mirror. :) Remember we don't support piracy here - but I know sometimes a no CD crack is the only way to get a legal version of a game working (which is pretty screwy).

You have a point there, fov (actually, you've got two of them :) ). It's meaningless to have an entire first page of the forum with stickies: would be like a desktop filled with shortcuts to ALL the programs in the start menu! (those of you who HAVE such a desktop, start pondering of how and where along the way it became an exercise in futility... )
This game is old, indeed, but adventure games are like the wine, you know... Myself, I am a collector: I collect every single game that 'promises' to be good, even if only in one aspect (technical/music/script/puzzles, etc.). When -and if- I get the time to play them is an entirely different matter. I've had Black Mirror in my possession for over a year now, but just got into the mood to play it last month. Anyway, what I mean to say is that Adventure games are possibly the only kind of game that does not loose its 'shine' in the c(o)urse of time...
Regarding the 'non-pirated versions' you mention, I believe too that sometimes even a legally purchased game needs the no-cd crack to run properly, if at all. I'll give you another example: I bought Half-Life 2 as soon as it hit the stores (collector's edition and all). After going through the leeeeeengthy installation process and the even leeeeeeeeeeeeeengthier activation process (with Steam and all, downloaded some 30MB of 'legal code') I got to play the game -eventually. Now, the game itself is a masterpiece, no doubt, an all-time-classic, and simply worth of all the praise it's been (and being) awarded. After I completed it, I decided (God forbid) to let Steam check if there were any game updates. After another looooooong wait in the server's queue, I got a message; a rather peculiar one, too: "There are 850MB of updates. Press Next to download". Yes, the number is right! Almost 1GB of patches, for no good or apparent reason. Naturally, I mean who would, I opted NOT to download the updates (cut me some slack, I'm on an ISDN connection). The result was that the game, ALL of the Steam-based games!, stopped playing!!! I couldn't even launch them!
Tell me now fov, what other solution was there for me? Should I uninstall, re-install, re-activate (after first registering again...) and get it to play, or should I download 850MB of un-necessary updates?
Or should I crack it?
Who can blame me, or whoever opted for this resolution?
~valliant~ :frusty:
I don't blame you at all. :) I would have done the same thing. I know of at least a few other games where the copy protection interferes with the ability to play a (legal) game, and the company is no help at all (Shadow of Destiny is one example). So the people they're trying to protect their games from are the very people who allow paying customers to play the games in the first place. Ironic.
I just wanted to clarify, though, because sometimes people *do* come here trying to get help to run pirated games, and that we can't help with.

Ann - as a last ditch attempt, have you tried emailing TAC tech support?
Maria, have you tried everything that was suggested in this thread? If yes, what exactly is the problem you're having - still a crash in chapter 2? Have you tried using a saved game? There's one in this thread (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showthread.php?t=6760) or if that save is in the wrong place, you might contact Valliant and see if he has another.
I'm sorry you're both having such issues with this game. It's pretty new and shouldn't be so hard to get running. :(

Don't give up on this game because you'll be truly missing out on a GREAT title. Despite what reviews I've read on some sites and the various 'bugs' that... bug it, it's still worth playing -once you get it going that is :\
First things first:
- read about what AGDS is here:
http://www.adventuregamers.com/print.php?id=486
- tell us more about the error message: when do you get it, have you tried running it on another pc, with a different OS-different CPU. What CPU do you have? What graphics card? How much system memory? What DirectX version?

Oh, do you have a version published by GMX Media? The Adventure Company published this game in the United States and Canada. I'm not sure they'll be able to help you if you don't have their version of the game. In any case, you can email them through their website (http://www.adventurecompanygames.com/tac). The questions Valliant asked are good ones, too. If you can tell us more about your computer and exactly what you've done before getting this error, that may help us come up with a solution.
Valliant, thanks for linking to that interview. I had no idea what AGDS would stand for! You're probably right, it's something to do with the game engine.

DirectX 6.1a?! That's very old. This game requires DirectX 7.1 (which is also pretty old). Update your DirectX, that's probably the problem. I think the most recent version is DirectX 9c.

Perhaps you could try backing up (i.e. making a copy of) your 'faulty' CD, using a program like Alcohol 52% or CloneCD. Then try creating an 'image CD-ROM' (using Alcohol again, or Virtual Drive) and 'mount' the backed up CD files on the image drive. Maybe, I say maybe, this would solve it.
~valliant~
P.S. (off the record/subject to fov-sensorship)
If you successfully get through the backup process and get an "insert CD 1" message (or similar) upon launching, find a 'no-CD crack' and be done with it.

If you have more than one CD drive, have you tried putting the disk in the other drive?
Have you tried this:
- copy majerk.chr to another folder (say \temp)

I would NEVER share links to such sites over a forum thread, esp. not on this forum. I respect the rules, even when they should, sometimes, be 'bent'. I would NEVER send s.o. along that "route" and all the fuss that goes with it. I know and you know that sometimes this kind of action is REALLY the last resort, and taking it is no more unethical than it is for the developers of such 'problematic' (excuse my Greek here) game to not offer any support.
However, there is a bright side to look upon: if there were only perfect games (functionality-wise) around and eager developers offering help at request, what use would there be for forums like this? And what'd become of all the chit-chat? :)
Nik.-

Ok, I've lost track with the posts on this thread! We got Widget off and running, but Maria and now Slstarbux are in a similar (?) situation... So, I'll try to make heads and tails with it. Bear with me, plz. :7
Fov has made some good suggestions, things to look for whenever in trouble (and I mean with any game). Screen resolution (800x600/16-bit is the safe setting), sound Harware Acceleration (DirectX setting), latest DirectX (version 9.0c now) never hurts, and updated drivers for both video and sound cards. One question that keeps popping up is: which card(s) do I have?
There are two ways to extract such information from your PC.
1. Start - Run... - dxdiag
Let it finish checking your system, browse through the tabs (esp. System, Display, Sound & Music) and look for problems. If this is all gibberish for you, save a report and attach it with your next post.
2. Download a program like EVEREST Home Edition (most magazines offer it on a monthly basis over here, it's free) and have your PC analysed to the last bit and byte. Again, attach (zipped) a report to your post.
Another common issue is with CD-/DVD-ROM drives. Generally, burners (-R) are more tolerating and forgiving to 'read-errors' (scratched disks, etc.) so you should first try these. Sometimes you get messages like 'insert disk 1' when you already have it inserted :frusty: I've found the solution to be (Schism, Myst IV, XIII, more) this: eject 'disk 1', insert 'disk 2', press OK, wait until you get the same message, then swap again. During the Myst IV installation in particular I had to do it over and over again, as many as four times I think :r Another bad example is XIII, where I had to have *two* (out of four) disks inserted (one in each -ROM drive) at the same time before the game would launch (this bug was corrected via a patch, to do Ubi some just).
Last but not least are the driver-related problems. Once you find out the model and make of your card(s) you can look for the latest driver. Read the installation instructions VERY carefully, as sometimes you've got to completely remove the previous drivers.
These are all off the top of my head. I'll fill in as it hits me . Off to bed now :Z

PS. People: DO NOT FORGET TO READ THE STICKY BY marek FIRST!!! BOTH PAGES!!! IT'S WELL WORTH IT ;)

Alas, if only we would EVER run out of games to play... We would then invent some new ones, perhaps even more challenging and involving.
Involving people, that is.

that File C:\Program File\BlackMirror\GFX2.GRP Is either corrupted or missing, now its not my drive and i even tried got a refund and tried again with another disk, is there anyway to download this file off the website or sumthing?, or do i have to get a no-crack cd thing?

A CD crack isn't going to help with that problem.
You've tried this with more than one copy of the disk and had the same problem? That's strange. Have you tried it on another computer?
The first thing I'd do is contact the publisher's tech support. If it's a North American (Adventure Company) release, you can send an email to tech support here (http://www.adventurecompanygames.com/tac/forms/tech_support.php).

Hmm, I was thinking about getting this game, but I've decided against it because of all the problems people had with it. Whether or not StarForce is causing the problem, I would probably be more likely to get this game if it didn't have copy protection on it. I just can't deal with all of this mess.
Yeah, yeah. I'm bumping an old thread.

It's a good game legolas, well worth playing if you liked nibiru, and you may have no problems with it at all. I bought it new a few weeks ago and it was cheap too, and everything worked fine. I have win XP pro. If you can find it cheap enough, (I paid £9.99 which is about $18), then it's not such a financial loss if it all goes pear shaped. Then again, I don't know your money situation, that may be a lot to find if you're a student or something.

Yes, I'm a college student. And I don't really feel like finding out a game doesn't work after I buy it (which is why I am thrilled at adventures on Xbox; i.e. Still Life, Syberia I and II, Indigo Prophecy, Dreamfall, Myst Revelation, etc.). I've seen Black Mirror for cheap (under $10), but still no thanks. But it seems more and more developers are moving away from Starforce now (hopefully), so it's all good.
Roman5
09-16-2005, 08:47 PM
Yeah I understand.
I had a problem when I bought the syberia collection on one DVD. It wouldn't do a full install,( but managed a minimum install), because there was a problem extracting a cutscene of the zeppelin. I decided to extract the DVD onto the hardrive with an ISO tool. Everything went fine and I was able to do a full install, but when it asked for the disc check serial number, I typed it from the back of the manual in the box and it didn't recognise it. I then realised this was because of starforce3. So I couldn't play the game I bought when extracted to the hardrive because of the protection. Anyway, I cleaned the DVD with a tiny dab of toothpaste and rinsed with water, ( yes it works :D ), and finally managed a full install direct from the DVD. But because of starforce3, I had to have the DVD in the drive to play the game, because it asks you for the damn disc key every time you load the game. With a full install you'd expect never to have to type a serial number more than once.
Anyway, if anyone ever buys a game which has a fault, first try that cleaning method. Or if you know it doesn't have protection, try extracting the whole disc. I don't think I said anything that's not allowed, because this is all based on owning a legal copy.

actually all problems with the pirated game should be solved by:
*snip* [We do not provide help with pirated games on this forum] *snip*
its a good thing though Maria you decided to buy the original one and not just use the easy way out of this. i salute you!
from the other hand, dont you just hate starforce???
oh and one more thing. about half life 2.
before the game was published, whenever you bought an ati graphics card, you would get a coupon that you could use in order to get an original copy of the game when it was released.
well read this mess! the game was released after 1 year i had got my at card.
i said, ok its time to get it. BUT, the really clever people of halflife wanted 4 damn pages of information in order to send it to me, and also i had to pay for postal charges, and i had to send them by mail, not email normal mail!, the reciept of the card! how on blazes was i supposed to have the reciept after a year?
but they offered me another chance. i could freely download the entire game from steem. how much is it? 3 gigabytes? aaahahahahahahahaha.... on my 56k modem? lol. not a chance. still have that coupon unused...
i just hate companies that overprotect games. mercy!

I have this problen too. I don't know what to do. I have tried all the solutions but nothing works for me. If some one could post save after the whole conversation with Det.
Thanks...
And sorry my english...
And yes I have the orginal cd's...

I can install the game without problem, but when I try to start it I first get a black screen and then a message that the there's something wrong with the agds.exe file.
I've read this thread through and checked if I was able to rename the files as suggested
- copy majerk.chr to another folder (say \temp)
- rename mejerk.chr -> majerk.chr (in game folder)
- rename majerk.chr -> mejerk.chr (in \temp)
- copy the NEW mejerk.chr back to the game folder
But I can't find any file called mejerk.chr I've got one majerk.chr and a majer.chr
Perhaps my problem isn't the same at all as the one that can be fixed by renaming like mentioned above.
Please help!

the very first time i tried opening it, i entered all the key codes and none worked now when i try opening the desktop shortcut, the orange Starforce box comes up, and reads "checking your disc" and when its about half way done it closes by itself and nothing happens, not even a black screen.

Hey Jelena-I was having the same problem as you, and reading everybody's advice gave me an idea, and now I can finally run "The Black Mirror". For us, just delete the majer.chr file, and it should work fine. I figured that out all by myself; I'm so proud! lol Thanks everyone for trying to help! ;)

I have tried all of the solutions, but found none worked, but after playing around the game worked!
1. Make a backup of the adgs config file.
2. Open adgs config file in notepad
3. Delete the line path=gfx3.grp
4. Save Changes and run adgs.exe
This solves the black screen problem.
Im not sure how it has effected anything later in the game, but it runs OK for me.
Let me know how it goes :)
