Though news of a Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition was first reported last week, today LucasArts confirmed the project and launched the official website for the game.

In this updated version for PC and Xbox Live Arcade, players can choose between Classic Mode or Special Edition Mode and even switch seamlessly between them while playing. The former will look like gamers fondly remember from the early '90s, while the latter will feature all-new artwork presented in 1080i resolution. Unlike the silent original, the new version will feature full voiceovers, including Dominic Armato as Guybrush, along with re-recorded and remastered music, a new game interface and a dynamic hint system.



For more details about this Secret of Monkey Island remake and an interactive minigame, be sure to check out the new website. While no firm release date has been set, the game is currently scheduled for release this summer.

With this project, along with today's stunning news of a Tales of Monkey Island episodic series in production, and the planned inclusion of an entire playable version of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis in the upcoming Wii title Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, it surely seems that LucasArts has finally re-embraced the genre after many years on estrangement. In fact, the Special Edition Facebook page states that "these efforts are just the start of LucasArts’ new mission to revitalize its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises" and better yet, "additional announcements are forthcoming."
