FINALLY.. Solution for non-supported video cards for BROKEN SWORD 4 ANGEL OF DEATH
i'm sooooo happy that i can play bs4 now.. i bought the game and got disappointed that my video card isn't supported 'cause mine is "Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family"
anyway.. here's the solution.. 1) download "3D-analyze" program v2.34.(u can find it in google) 2) open the program and press SELECT and choose the game file "bs4pc.exe" 3) check these settings >> "force SW TnL" and "emulate pixel shader caps" 4) press RUN. if the game started with sound only (no video) then check "force max. pixel shader version 1.4" and RUN the game. this really worked 4 me and the game worked perfectly i hope this helps u. and excuse my ENGLISH 'cause i'm Yemeni Last edited by snake7beckham; 05-09-2007 at 06:51 PM. |

I don't know.....I followed the instructions above, but my mouse/cursor still works unsatisfactory.
I'll check into it again later.

is it the mouse cursor only or the whole game??
if it's the mouse cursor only then u have to update ur drivers (the readme file talks about that) and if the game doesn't work fine then go to the game directory and delete every file that had been added recently (files created by 3d-analyze) u can know that by looking at "date modified" . after that launch 3d-analyze and do as i said before and the game should work. |

It's only the mouse/cursor.

Fantastic, thanks snake7beckham. I'd just like to add that if you're using Vista you'll have to run 3DAnalyze as an administrator, which took me rather too long to work out.

Is this specific to BS4 or is this a solution that would (theoretically) work for any 3D game?

The utility is clearly designed to work with lots of different games. The online help has a list of programs it's been tested with, though it didn't include BS4.
The problem from my point of view is that there's a bewildering array of different options - I would have had no idea which to pick without this thread.

Well, shoot. I was finally able to give this a go tonight, and can't seem to make it work.
It does start the game using the options provided in the original post, however I get no video no matter what I select. I *do* get sound, however. Any ideas? I have absolutely *no* clue as to what any of the options in the program actually do... The video card on my laptop is--according to the device manager--an Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM) |

Same here. The game didn't run at all at first; I always got the same bug message. I followed the instructions and got it to run only to find that though the game evidently runs normally, I can't see it //edit: I already installed the patch. Nothing changed.
I have an ATI Mobility Radeon card. And no clue about the technical details. Last edited by Noman Peopled; 10-08-2007 at 11:35 AM. |

Thought I'd bump this. I have the same onboard video card as the original poster and had BS 4 shelved until I finished a few other games. Their solution did work like a charm but I am experience the mouse lag problem as well. Have already installed the patch. Changing the config file (as suggested in the patch txt file) doesn't work (causes the game to produce no sound or video).
It's annoying to have the mouse lag problem but it's not as bad as when I played Scratches and I still enjoyed it and played the game from start to finish! Just wondering if anyone had solved the mouse lag problem yet?

Thought I'd post for anyone using 3D-analyze to run Broken Sword 4 with a similiar mouse lag problem where changing the config line doesn't work.
After selecting a bunch of different options on the 3D-analyze screen, I have much better mouse performance if "Quality Mode" under "Remove Stuttering" is checked. I also changed my resolution to 800x600 (without much loss in detail). Mouse performance is waaaaay better. Not optimal but definitely playable without wanting to throw my laptop out the window.

If a game is designed to make use of 3D acceleration, then it shouldn't be a surprise when you try (and fail) to run it on 2D acceleration IGPs?
Yes, this emulator can maybe make it possible to run it, but it puts me in mind of having a mini engine installed in a Formula 1 racing car and then just because it looks like it'll work, expecting it to be as fast as the real F1 car?! The 2007 version of furry dice and 'go faster stripes' for Ford Escorts? Hmm... I used to run BS4 on an old Nvidia Ti-4200 and didn't get too much mouse lag at all with a P4 2.4 Ghz, whereas my daughter found it unplayable on a P4 3.0 Ghz and a later Geforce 7 (though not high performance) series card. If you enjoy playing 3D games at < 5 fps then you have more patience than me. If you're going to software emulate pixel shading as well, surely this is going to tie your CPU up even further?
